CBH Eye on the World
India 2007
On January 12th, 2007, John Walters (coordinator of Christians Broadcasting Hope), Amanda Owens (missions education administrator for Global Missions) and Logan Ritchhart (media specialist for Christians Broadcasting Hope), and Lou Ann Rectoron departed for a thirteen day trip to Cuttack, India.
Cuttack is the site where the Christians Broadcasting Hope (CBH) Oriya language broadcast originates. This trip is in preparation for the launching of a new Hindi language broadcast that will ultimately reach over six hundred million people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The CBH studios are located on the ground of The Shelter, a Church of God work that began in 1914 as an orphanage for young girls who were rescued from various states of desperation including temple prostitution.
Over the course of our stay in Cuttack you will read about the many and varied ministries taking place on the seven acre plot of land called The Shelter. As the main purpose of our trip is to support the renovation of the studio in preparation for the launch of the new Hindi broadcast we will begin with the CBH Studios.
We met with the staff of the studio and had discussions regarding the renovation that is taking place. We watched as doors were installed, double pane windows were being installed, and we were brought more fully up to speed on things yet to be done.
With monies provided by First Church of God in Dodge City, Kansas and Lynchwood Church of God in Portland Oregon, Bibles have already been purchased in both the Oriya and Hindi languages for use in seekers conferences that are held, usually, twice each year.
Between eight and ten actors and three staff persons record programs that air each week throughout the state of Orissa. These programs are presented as dramas in which everyday problems are played out and biblical solutions provided, normally by a headman in the village. This kind of drama is very relevant to the Indian culture and is an effective way of communicating the gospel. The Oriya broadcast reaches approximately sixty million people in the state of Orissa. This same format will be carried over into the new Hindi broadcast using the same studio personnel and actors making the impact of this effort at least ten times more wide reaching.
The studio personnel and the actors have a passion for reaching the lost that is quite evident, and this ministry is one of the most exciting ministries within the Church of God Reformation Movement. Please pray for them as they continue ministering in perhaps the most difficult state in India.
