Okay, be honest: during the recent presidential campaign did you tune in to any of the cable news networks? CNN? Fox? MSNBC? And don’t forget staples like National Public Radio and PBS. And ABC, CBS, and NBC? They’re still in the game too, of course. News. News. News. It’s one of the modern media’s fastest growing edges. We seem to have an insatiable appetite to learn about what’s going on in the world around us these days—and with good reason: there’s a lot going on that can have dramatic impact on where we live, right here, right now.

Headlines tend to make for dreary reading, though. Lots of gloom and doom out there. Yes, yes, a new presidential term will shortly begin, and there’s always a sense of great expectations whenever somebody new moves into the White House. Yes, yes, the new year is dawning, and there’s always a hope that events will “turn a corner” as we stare at the calendar for 2009. But, from pirates hijacking supertankers off the coast of Somalia to conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo (DR), the Middle East, and more, to Wall Street and Main Street, to fears about climate change, well, headline news is all too often depressing news.

But wait. Maybe we’re just not getting all of the news. There is good news too. In fact, the New Testament word gospel literally means just that: good news.
